"Can I take you out to dinner?"
"Yes, please," I said, even though dinner out at the last minute means we're joined by the offspring. Still, who can complain about not having to cook and clean up? Not me.
We headed out to Taco Del Mar (we had the kids with us, remember) to get their fantastic dinner special, $5 for a taco, enchilada, rice, and beans. Delicious, of course. Then we went to New Season's next door for treats.

Can I just say how much I love New Season's? Their slogan is The Friendliest Store in Town and I have to say, it's true. It really, honestly, is true. The employees always have a little chat about what you purchase, like "Oh that's so good, I had one yesterday!" I love how the person at the bakery counter will sit and tell me what exactly is in each dessert. That thing called a Black Beauty? Chocolate cake, espresso mousse, more chocolate cake. Hmmmm, no thanks.
How about the Whoopie Pie?

Two soft chocolate cookies with custard in the middle. I picked that up for Bryan.
The kids always get mini red velvet cupcakes, frosting must be licked off first, then entire cupcake stuffed in the mouth for maximum effect.

The only dessert I get, ever, is the Oatmeal Carmelita. It's a little piece of heaven on earth.
Speaking of heaven, we sat down to eat our dessert and listen to the live music that plays on Friday nights. This group was a trio that did folksy stuff with a banjo, mandolin, guitars, etc. I sat there listening to music and watching the people around me. I saw other families having Friday night dinner out. One man was showing some friends the giant artichoke he had just purchased. They were laughing at how big it was. And I thought, surely this is what Heaven is. A warm and sunny Friday night with no plans, good music, good food, one happy kid on your lap, the other one dancing and happy people all around. And Oatmeal Carmelitas.

That is a good way to end the day. The banjo made it, I'm sure. :)
