Sniffing Books

I love books. I love reading books. I love buying books. I love stacking and sorting books. I love talking about books and writing about books. It's a bit of an obsession. I also love smelling books. I don't know if it's the ink or the paper but I can't get enough of the smell. Some smell better than others. Tonight I was reading to Molly out of the Dr. Suess collection (The Sneetches) and Molly leaned down onto the page.

"This book smells really good," she said.

Wow. I know some parents are proud when their kids learn to walk or ride a bike, but I think this might be the most proud I've ever been of her.

"Yeah, I love smelling books" I said. We smelled several to see which ones had the most pleasing scent. The verdict?

#1 Dr. Suess
#2 Polar Express
#3 Bats at the Beach

Side-note: Molly said Make Way for Ducklings was stinky (it was). I should make a disclaimer that the scent has nothing to do with how good the book actually is, because Make Way for Ducklings really is a lovely book.

I guess I am missing out on the smell of books. I might just have to try it. I do know that my baby names book stinks, but that is because some OJ spilled on it. I do love reading the books!
